Pocket Purifier Giveaway - CLOSED

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. A WINNER WILL BE DRAWN SOON. THANKS!

Today's Mother's Day Madness giveaway is sponsored by Purely Products. The makers of the Pocket Purifier.

With the recent new outbreak of swine flu I think it's safe to say that we're all taking a few extra measures to ensure our families health. I'm not one of those germaphobe types by any means (which is totally fine if you are). I just don't obsess about it. But I do try to be careful.

When I was sent the Pocket Purifier it seemed a little weird to me, to be honest. The device is about twice as big as a standard sized cell phone and looks like an odd shaped flashlight (which it is!).

So, how does it work?

Pocket Purifier™ has a built-in UV-C bulb that when turned on and exposed to surface areas or items needing purified, will attack the germs and bacteria killing their DNA, and preventing them from reproducing and growing.

So what is UV-C?

UV-C light is germicidal - i.e., it deactivates the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens and thus destroys their ability to multiply and cause disease. Specifically, UV-C light causes damage to the nucleic acid of microorganisms by forming covalent bonds between certain adjacent bases in the DNA. The formation of such bonds prevent the DNA from being unzipped for replication, and the organism is unable to reproduce. In fact, when the organism tries to replicate, it dies.

UV-C light has been tested for the past 60 years by governmental and private agencies and companies and the conclusion remains that there is simply nothing more effective for killing germs and bacteria, purifying the air we breath and the water we drink.

So, I popped some batteries in it and make a conscious effort to use it and kept it in my purse.

I used it on the doorknobs in my house. The handle on the shopping cart. Over the keyboard on our desktop computer. The table at McDonald's. (yeah I probably looked weird out in public waving a "flashlight" over every surface). Of course I couldn't see if it worked at killing germs and purifying surfaces and what not.

I asked my best friend to ask her Mom (who is a nurse at a local hospital) if she'd ever heard of such a device and she said that she had and that it was effective. So I did get some peace of mind about this little gadget. Not that I had any reason to doubt it, it's just...well it looks like a flashlight. You don't think of flashlights as germ killers or purifiers. Know what I mean?

And speaking of flashlights, it comes with a built in flashlight!

All in all I like this product and I think it's can be quite handy for those times when you can't wipe down a surface with an anti-bacterial cleaner.

Purely Products has giving one Fairy Blog Mother reader the opportunity to try the Pocket Purifier for themselves.

It purifies telephone sets! That's something you don't think about too much. I work on public computers in libraries and I could DEFINITELY use this to purify keyboards, mice and monitors when I have to touch them. GREAT IDEA!!

Felicity May 11, 2009 2:12 PM

I think the price is impressive. It only costs $29.95. I always hate it when you wash your hands after using the bathroom in a public restroom, then you have to touch the dirty doorknob to leave. I would definitely use it for this purpose if I win.

TheEclecticElement May 11, 2009 2:48 PM

It uses 2 AA batteries and is easily carriable.
This may sound wierd, but I like the fact that it takes 2 AA batteries. You would think it would be more complex, but it really isn't!
