Whip It - Movie Review
A beauty pageant contestant turned roller derby queen. I mean seriously...that just screams COOL.
Bliss (Ellen Page) is a a quiet/geeky and kind of rebellious teen who works at The Oink Joint. (Gawd, what I'd give to have that on my resume. LOL). Juno's Bliss' mom (Marcia Gay Harden) dreams of raising her two daughters to be beauty queen/pageant winners. Bliss learns about an all girls roller derby team while out shopping one day when some of the roller girls come in to drop off fliers at a store to promote their event. Bliss and her buddy take off to go watch and the rest is roller derby history...much to her mother's dismay.
Drew Barrymore (Smashley Simpson) makes her directorial debut with this film and she also co-stars as one of the roller girls. And this film also brings Drew back together with Jimmy Fallon (Hot Tub/Johnny Rocket) (what was that baseball movie they both starred in? Fever Pitch?) though they don't play love interests in this film. Juliette Lewis (Iron Maven) plays the tough girl leader on the rival team, the Holy Rollers.
There are many comical moments in the film. I kind of had a hard time not thinking of Juno every time Ellen Page was on screen...she'll forever be Juno. And that is not a bad thing.
Through the whole film, Megan and I noticed that the Hurl Scouts coach (Razor) sounded like Owen Wilson. We kept saying if we closed our eyes he would sound just like him. He was kinda scraggly looking and wearing jean cut-off shorts through the whole film. We probably said (out loud) like 15 times..."OMG he sounds just like Owen Wilson!". Turns out...his name is Andrew Wilson and he's Luke and Owen's brother. Well duhhhhhh. LOL
And he's also in Fever Pitch, The Royal Tennenbaum's and Zoolander. Where the hell have I been?
Anyway, this is my new favorite "tough girl" movie. Seriously.
And roller derby girls have the most badass names ever. Ever.
We actually clapped at the end of the film.
It was awesome. Totally awesome.
Go Hurl Scouts!
